The Human Pavilion Incident
From March to July 1903 (Meiji 36), a show tent called the "Academic Anthropology Hall" was set up near the site of the Industrial Exposition held in Osaka, where, under the pretext of academic research materials, two "Ryukyuan" prostitutes were "displayed" under the name "Ladies of the Ryukyus" along with "Ainu," "Taiwanese aboriginals," "Koreans," "Javanese," "Turks," "Africans," etc. The April 11th issue of the "Ryukyu Shimpo" of the same year stated, "The fact that we have been selected to be from our prefecture together with the aboriginal North Sea Ainu of Taiwan and others is because we are viewed as aboriginal Ainu.
