This old city occupies almost the center of the Koto Plain in central Shiga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed as a market town with a commercial sphere in the surrounding rural areas, and before the Meiji period, the city was established on the 2nd and 8th of each month. There are factories producing machinery and electrical equipment, semiconductors, printing, etc. Since the construction of the Yokaichi Interchange on the Meishin Expressway, the number of factories moving in has increased significantly. It is the junction of the Omi Railway's main line and the Yokaichi line. Rice and wheat cultivation, tobacco and tea (Mandokoro tea), poultry farming, and dairy cow raising are thriving in the surrounding area. Sanada himo is a specialty product. In February 2005, it merged with Egenji-cho and Gokasho-cho in Kanzaki County, and Aito-cho and Koto-cho in Aichi County to become a city, Higashiomi City. 52.60 km2 . Population 43,273 (2003). 滋賀県中部,湖東平野のほぼ中央を占める旧市。1954年市制。中心市街は周辺農村に商圏をもつ市場町として発達し,明治以前は2,8の日に市が立った。機械電気機器,半導体,印刷などの工場がある。名神高速道路八日市インターチェンジ設置後,工場進出が著しい。近江(おうみ)鉄道の本線と八日市線との分岐点。周辺では米麦作,タバコ・茶(政所(まんどころ)茶)栽培,養鶏,乳牛飼育が盛ん。真田ひもを特産。2005年2月神崎郡永源寺町,五個荘町,愛知郡愛東町,湖東町と合併し市制,東近江市となる。52.60km2。4万3273人(2003)。
