Yokaichi [city] - Yokaichi
This old city occupies almost the center of the Koto Plain in central Shiga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed as a market town with a commercial sphere in the surrounding rural areas, and before the Meiji period, the city was established on the 2nd and 8th of each month. There are factories producing machinery and electrical equipment, semiconductors, printing, etc. Since the construction of the Yokaichi Interchange on the Meishin Expressway, the number of factories moving in has increased significantly. It is the junction of the Omi Railway's main line and the Yokaichi line. Rice and wheat cultivation, tobacco and tea (Mandokoro tea), poultry farming, and dairy cow raising are thriving in the surrounding area. Sanada himo is a specialty product. In February 2005, it merged with Egenji-cho and Gokasho-cho in Kanzaki County, and Aito-cho and Koto-cho in Aichi County to become a city, Higashiomi City. 52.60 km2 . Population 43,273 (2003).
