A river in southeastern France. A tributary of the Rhône, it is 290 km long. It originates in the Vanoise mountain range in the French Alps and forms a prominent longitudinal valley between the French limestone Alps and the Belledonne mountain range, called the "Alpine graben". It divides the Belcors and Grande Chartreuse limestone Alps with a horizontal valley around Grenoble and joins the Rhône at Valence. It is navigable for 150 km from the confluence, and has been used as a transportation route across the Alps since ancient times. Along with its tributaries, the Arc and the Drach, hydroelectric power generation is thriving, and the river basin is home to Grenoble, as well as other industrial cities such as Ugine and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
