1865‐1929 A realist painter who played a leading role in the American art world in the early 20th century. Born in Cincinnati, he graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to the United States in 1891. He produced mainly portraits that combined the styles of Velázquez and F. Hals, and in 1908 organized the exhibition "The Eight," advocating a new realism from an anti-academic and anti-modernist standpoint. He also made a major mark as an art educator, educating such artists as S. Davis, E. Hopper, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
