A realist painter who played a leading role in the American art world in the early 20th century. Born in Cincinnati, he graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to the United States in 1891. He produced mainly portraits that combined the styles of Velázquez and F. Hals, and in 1908 organized the exhibition "The Eight," advocating a new realism from an anti-academic and anti-modernist standpoint. He also made a major mark as an art educator, educating such artists as S. Davis, E. Hopper, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi.

20世紀初頭のアメリカ画壇で指導的な役割を演じた写実画家。シンシナティ生れ。ペンシルベニア美術アカデミーを出たあとパリのアカデミー･ジュリアン，エコール･デ･ボザールで学び，1891年帰国。ベラスケス，F.ハルスなどの様式を折衷した人物画を中心に制作し，反アカデミズムと反モダニズムの立場から1908年に〈ジ･エイトThe Eight〉展を組織して新しい写実を提唱した。美術教育者としても大きな足跡を残し，S.デービス，E.ホッパー，国吉康雄らを育てた。
