Soleure in French. The capital of the canton of Solothurn in northern Switzerland. It is located about 50 km south of Basel, at the southern foot of Mt. Weissenstein (1,279 m), on the left bank of the Aare River. It is an ancient city with a history dating back to pre-Roman times, and remains include an 18th century cathedral built on the site of a medieval cathedral, a 13th century clock tower, and a 15th century town hall. Industries in the surrounding areas, such as machinery, electrical equipment, and textiles, are thriving. Population 15,480 (1990).
