Sendaihagi - Sendaihagi

A perennial plant of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The stem is erect and 40-90 cm tall. The leaves have 3 palmate leaflets, which are ovate or obovate, 5-7 cm long, and have white soft hairs on the underside. The base of the petiole has large leaf-like stipules. From May to August, a raceme appears at the top of the stem, and many yellow butterfly-shaped flowers bloom. The flowers are about 2.5 cm long, and the stamens are separate. The legumes are linear and flat, 7-11 cm long, and dehisce to scatter 10-15 seeds. It grows on the coast and is distributed in the temperate zones of Hokkaido, Honshu north of the Chubu region, East Asia, and northern North America. The name was apparently chosen to refer to the kabuki play "Meiboku Sendaihagi," and refers to the bush clover that grows in Sendai City.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の多年草。茎は直立し、高さ40～90センチメートル。葉は3小葉が掌状につき、小葉は卵形ないし倒卵形で長さ5～7センチメートル、裏面に白い軟毛がある。葉柄の基部には、大形で葉状の托葉(たくよう)をつける。5～8月、茎頂に総状花序を出し、黄色の蝶形花(ちょうけいか)を多数開く。花は長さ約2.5センチメートル、雄しべは離生する。豆果は線形で扁平(へんぺい)、長さ7～11センチメートル、裂開して10～15個の種子を飛ばす。海岸に生え、北海道、中部地方以北の本州、および東アジア、北アメリカ北部の温帯に分布する。名は、歌舞伎(かぶき)の『伽羅先代萩(めいぼくせんだいはぎ)』にかこつけて、仙台市に生える萩の意味でつけられたという。
