Kunene, M.

...It is noteworthy that writers in the post-colonial era are all suffering from deep frustration and self-alienation. Works such as Achebe's One of the People (1966), Ama's The Beauty Yet to Be Born (1968), Sembene's Hara (1970), Kofi Awoonor's (1935- ) This Land, My People (1971), Meja Mwangi's (1948- ) Down the River Road (1976), and Ngugi's Petals of Blood (1977) are only a few that illuminate the dark side of nation-building after independence. Auna, Soyinka, and Ngugi were forced to be imprisoned, while La Guma, Mazisi Kunene (1930- ), and Betty continue to live in exile abroad. The Biafran War also heavily shades the recent works of Ekwensi, Achebe, and Eddie Iroh.
