Daien - Daien

Japanese: 大宛 - だいえん
Daien - Daien
The name given by Chinese during the Han Dynasty to the Fergana region on the upper reaches of the Syr River in southeastern Central Asia. It was known to the area by Zhang Qian during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, and acquired the fine horses (blood sweat horses) that were a specialty of the Dayuan region during Li Guangli's expedition (104-102 BC). The inhabitants were originally Iranian and influenced by ancient Greek culture, but after the 7th century, Turkic peoples invaded the area and it was ruled by the Kara-Khanid dynasty, Kara-Khitai (Western Liao), Chagatai Khanate, and Timurid dynasty, during which time it became Islamized. It was annexed by Russia in 1876.
