… In 626 (the 9th year of Wude), the first emperor of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Gaozu, ordered his son Zu Xiaosun to adopt the theory of seven tones, twelve tunes, and eighty-four tones, and established the “Music of the Twelve Harmonies,” which was performed at suburban temples, ancestral temples, the First Silkworm Festival, and morning assemblies in the palace courtyard. Later, during the reign of Xuanzong, three harmony was added, and a large-scale gagaku called Kaiyuan Gagaku was established. After the three great dances (the Seven Virtue Dance, the Nine Merit Dance, and the Shangyuan Dance) were created during the reigns of Taizong and Gaozong, many similar banquet music pieces were created, leading to the establishment of the two-piece troupe (the Standing Dance and the Sitting Dance) consisting of 14 pieces. …
