A general term for the ethnic groups living on the east coast of South America and on the islands of the Caribbean. They migrated from Venezuela about 100 years before the discovery of the New World, conquered the indigenous Arawak people, and occupied the entire Lesser Antilles and part of Trinidad. They rapidly declined in the 15th and 16th centuries. They make their living by cultivating fruit and fishing, but they are also warlike and have faith in shamans and guardian spirits. The word cannibalism originates from the Spanish word Canib, which means Caribbean. It is also the origin of the name Caribbean Sea.

南米東海岸およびカリブ海の島に住む諸民族をさす総称。新大陸発見の100年前ごろからベネズエラから移住し，先住のアラワク人を征服し，小アンティル諸島全域およびトリニダード島の一部を占拠。15―16世紀に急速に衰退。果樹栽培と漁労を業としているが，好戦的でシャマン，守護精霊の信仰がある。もとスペイン語でカリブの意のCanibから食人風習cannibalismという言葉ができた。カリブ海という名称のもとともなった。
