…While studying at the seminary, he was influenced by Tolstoyism, and after entering the Theological University in the capital of St. Petersburg in 1898, he participated in evangelism in the workers' district. He eventually became acquainted with Moscow's security chief Zbatov, who advocated a legal labor movement controlled by the police, and in 1903 he organized a workers' coffee club, and based on that, in 1904, with the permission of the authorities, he established the Gathering of Russian Factory Workers of St. Petersburg (commonly known as the Gapon Union). After a union member was fired at the end of the same year, he decided to put his long-held ideas into practice, and led a petition march to the emperor on January 22, 1905 (the 9th in the Russian calendar) (Bloody Sunday incident). …
