Ghalib - Ghalib (English spelling)

An Indian Urdu poet. Born in Agra, he later moved to Delhi. He was the poetry teacher of Bahadur Shah II of the Mughal dynasty. He excelled in lyric poetry (ghazals), and was known as one of the two great masters of ghazals along with Mir, and his "Ghalib's Collection of Poetry" is still widely read and loved today. His poetry is notable for expressing philosophical and ideological content through his own innovative expressive techniques and elegant rhythm. In addition to Urdu poetry, his simple epistolary writing is highly regarded as a forerunner of modern Urdu prose. He also excelled in Persian poetry, and is said to be the last classical Persian poet on the Indian subcontinent.

インドのウルドゥー語詩人。アグラに生まれ、のちデリーに移った。ムガル朝のバハードゥル・シャー2世の詩の師匠にあたる。叙情詩（ガザル）がとくに優れ、ミールと並んでガザルの二大巨匠と称され、『ガーリブ詩集』はいまも広く愛読されている。彼の詩は哲学的、思想的な内容を、独自の斬新(ざんしん)な表現技法と流麗な韻律で表しているところに大きな特徴がある。ウルドゥー詩のほか、平明な書簡文はウルドゥー近代散文の先駆として高く評価されている。ペルシア語による詩作にも優れ、インド亜大陸最後の古典ペルシア語詩人といわれている。
