Ajishima - Ajishima

Japanese: 網地島 - あじしま
Ajishima - Ajishima

An island located in the western tip of the Oshika Peninsula in central Miyagi Prefecture. It belongs to Ishinomaki City. Its area is 6.43 square kilometers. It is a long island, stretching about 5.5 kilometers from north to south and 1.5 kilometers from east to west. The northern end of the island is Aji, and the southern end is Futawatari, where people are engaged in agriculture and fishing. The climate is not very hot and cold, and subtropical plants grow naturally. The center of the island is almost flat, because the entire island is a coastal terrace. It is included in Sanriku Reconstruction National Park (formerly Minamisanriku Kinkazan Quasi-National Park), and has Shirahama Beach. The Ajishima Line operates from Ishinomaki Port, connecting Tashiro Island, Ajishima, and Ayukawa. In 1955 (Showa 30), the island had a population of 3,299, which decreased to 505 in 2009 (Heisei 21).
