M - M

It is the 13th letter of the English alphabet. It originated from the Egyptian hieroglyph for an owl, and passed through the Semitic letter mem, through the Greek letter mu, and into its present form with little change. As a unit of length, it stands for meter or mile, and as a unit of time, it is an abbreviation for millimeter, which is one thousandth of a second, in mg and mm, and for minute. The M in AM and PM is an abbreviation of the Latin meridiem, which means noon. In clothing sizes, it stands for medium, and in French, M. stands for Monsieur, and MM. indicates the plural. In American military terminology, it is used to indicate the model of a munition (such as the M-14 rifle).

英語アルファベットの第13字。フクロウを表すエジプトの象形文字に起源をもち、セム文字memから、ほとんど変化することなくギリシア文字ミューμを経て、現在の形に至っている。長さの単位として、メートルやマイルを表し、mgやmmでは1000分の1を表すミリの略号であり、時間の単位では分の略号である。また、A.M.やP.M.のMは正午を表すラテン語meridiemの略である。服などのサイズでは中mediumを表し、またフランス語ではM.はMonsieurを表し、MM.はその複数を示す。アメリカの軍事用語では、軍需品の型modelの指示に用いられる（ライフルM‐14など）。
