Alkman - Alkman (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Greek lyric poet of the late 7th century BC. Said to have been born in Lydia or Sparta. Active as a choral poet in Sparta, he established the form of choral lyric poetry. He had six volumes of poetry, but only fragments remain. His delicate sensitivity to nature and beauty, and his delicacy in conveying the subtleties of emotion, suggest that he was a born poet. The nearly 100-line fragment "Partheneion" (Maiden's Song) is important in understanding him.

生没年不詳。紀元前7世紀後半のギリシアの叙情詩人。リディアの生まれとも、スパルタ人ともいわれる。スパルタで合唱詩人として活躍し、合唱叙情詩の形式を樹立した。6巻の詩集があったが、断片しか残っていない。自然や美に対する細やかな感受性、感情の機微を伝える繊細さなどから天成の詩人であったと思われる。100行近い断片『パルテネイオン』（乙女歌）は、彼を知るうえで重要である。
