In the north, rivers flowing toward the Caribbean Sea form deep valleys, and near the sea lies Lake Izabal, the country's largest lake (590 km2). The Peten region is part of the Yucatan Peninsula and is a lowland made of limestone, most of which is covered with dense forest.
