Gazette de France

Gazette de France
A newspaper founded by T. Renaud on May 30, 1631, with the backing of Richelieu, the Prime Minister of Louis XIII. It was originally called simply the Gazette, and changed its name to the Gazette de France in 1762. It was the official gazette of the Louis dynasty until the French Revolution. It was long believed that the Gazette was the first newspaper in France, and therefore that Renaud was the first founder of a newspaper in France (Voltaire). However, after World War II, thanks to the efforts of Swedish newspaper history researcher Dahl and others, it was discovered that four and a half months before the founding of the Gazette, book publishers Jean Martin and Louis Vendome had founded the weekly newspaper Nouvelles ordinaires de divers endroits (the 27th issue, dated July 17, 1631, was discovered).
