A former town in Minamiakita County in the northwest of Akita Prefecture. It occupies a long, narrow area between Lake Hachirogata and the Sea of Japan. It mainly produces rice, but also vegetables, fruit, and tobacco leaves. It is particularly famous for its melon cultivation. There are oil fields in Sarukawa and Fukumesawa in the central part of the town, and it produces crude oil and natural gas. It was incorporated into Oga City in March 2005. Area: 42.74 km2 . 秋田県北西部,南秋田郡の旧町。八郎潟と日本海にはさまれた細長い地域を占める。米作を中心とするが,野菜,果樹,葉タバコも産する。特にメロン栽培は有名。中部の申川(さるかわ),福米沢(ふくめさわ)には油田があり,原油,天然ガスを産する。2005年3月男鹿市へ編入。42.74km2。7501人(2003)。
