Banzai is a traditional dance handed down in the Chita Peninsula area of Aichi Prefecture. It is also called Chita Banzai. Farmers would travel around their donnaba (dannaba) during the New Year's holiday in the farming off-season, but some would visit all over the country all year round. It is said that Muju Kokushi, the founder of Choboji Temple in Kigazaki (Nagoya City), started this dance with a poor farmer and his son in the mid-Kamakura period. The five religious Banzai, "Hokkekyo Banzai," "Rokujo Banzai," "Shinriki Banzai," "Oshiro Banzai," and "Jiwari Banzai," are performed by Tayu and Saizō, and after each performance, they perform the humorous "Fukukura Mokura (Naka-Kanaka Banzai)." Tayu typically wears a standing eboshi hat, a hitatare robe, and holds a fan in his hand, while Saizō typically wears a Daikokuzukin hood, kosode, a tattsuke robe, and holds a drum in his hand.

After the Meiji period, a few people would perform on stage "Goten Manzai," "Sankyoku Manzai," a play involving drums, shamisen, and kokyu, and dialogue (also known as Okuda-bushi or Ainarae).
