King of the Jews (reigned 37-4 BC). Commonly known as "The Great." Appointed king by a powerful Roman, he recaptured Jerusalem, established an autocratic government, extensively renovated the Temple of Jerusalem, and built many cities. Due to his suspicions, he executed his wife and three of his own children.
