An accessory for footwear. It is used to protect the toes from getting dirty in the rain or snow, and is also called tsumagawa (claw leather). Tsumagawa was originally a leather product, but today the two are used interchangeably. There are two types of tsumagawa: one for straw sandals and one for geta (wooden clogs). The former are made of straw and include "hanamoji" (Hida, Awa) and "shibukarami" (Echigo, Shiozawa). The latter are kamaboko-shaped and are used to hang on the toes of geta. They are made of leather, oil paper, cotton, celluloid, etc., and are made to be waterproof. The rubber cord that fastens the tsumagawa is said to have been invented in 1877 (Meiji 10) by Niikura Yohei of Rokumon-ya, a clog maker in Sakai-cho, Nihonbashi, Osaka.
