Lublin is the capital of the Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland. It is located 150 km southeast of the capital, Warsaw, and is the economic, administrative, and cultural center of the eastern region. It has a population of 354,026 (2001). It is located on the road from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and flourished as a commercial town in the 10th century. It prospered after the Kingdom of Poland moved its capital to Krakow, and many market squares, town halls, castles, and churches remain, reminiscent of the 14th to 17th centuries, making it a tourist destination. The current Polish government was formed when the anti-German resistance movement declared its establishment in Lublin on July 22, 1944. The area on the right bank of the Vistula River to the west of the city is economically backward, and is an agricultural region mainly producing beets, hemp, and rye. After World War II, the city rapidly industrialized, with industries such as transportation machinery (motorcycles, tanker trucks, tractors), agricultural machinery, and food processing (meat, sugar, beer) being carried out. There are also many higher education institutions and cultural facilities. [Shigeru Yamamoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
