〘 noun 〙 In the Middle Ages, the lord of a manor paid lay people to manor officials below the rank of jito or land steward, priests at shrines and temples, and other people to administer the land. These peasants were exempt from the obligation to pay annual taxes (lay tax) to the lord, and in return, they paid menkeyaku (exemption from lay tax) to the lord.
