〘 noun 〙 In the Middle Ages, the lord of a manor paid lay people to manor officials below the rank of jito or land steward, priests at shrines and temples, and other people to administer the land. These peasants were exempt from the obligation to pay annual taxes (lay tax) to the lord, and in return, they paid menkeyaku (exemption from lay tax) to the lord. Exempt from lay tax. ※Koyasan documents - December 1159, first year of Heiji (1st year), Kongobu-ji temple office official exemption from duties in Kyoto: "Once the above case was brought to Kyoto, the exemption was placed on _{_{the lord}} , _and _thereafter , _it has been _{an unbroken} example _every year."
