...The prevailing theory is that it was improved as an indoor game during the time of Charles IX of France in the 16th century, but in any case, the original form of billiards is said to have been an outdoor sport in which players rolled stones placed on the ground with a curved stick called a mace, one end of which was placed on the shoulder and the other end of which was held in hand, and it is generally believed that billiards was invented to be played indoors based on this. Later, in England, pocket billiards, a game with pockets on the table through which the balls could fall, was developed, while in continental Europe, mainly in France, carom billiards, a game with a pocketless table, was studied and spread. The invention and improvement of new equipment played a major role in the progress of billiards. ...
