The kingdom of the Fon people once flourished in the southern part of the present Republic of Benin. It expanded its power in the early 18th century, but was defeated by the Yoruba Kingdom of Oyo to the east and became a vassal state for a time. However, when Oyo declined in the first half of the 19th century, it escaped from their control and flourished. It had a powerful military and a highly organized political system, and prospered through the slave trade and palm oil trade. Although it was relatively small in size, it left its mark as a powerful nation in West Africa at the time. As the great powers advanced into Africa, it became a French colony in 1894. The royal palace in the capital, Abomey, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
