The kingdom of the Fon people once flourished in the southern part of the present Republic of Benin. It expanded its power in the early 18th century, but was defeated by the Yoruba Kingdom of Oyo to the east and became a vassal state for a time. However, when Oyo declined in the first half of the 19th century, it escaped from their control and flourished. It had a powerful military and a highly organized political system, and prospered through the slave trade and palm oil trade. Although it was relatively small in size, it left its mark as a powerful nation in West Africa at the time. As the great powers advanced into Africa, it became a French colony in 1894. The royal palace in the capital, Abomey, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985.

現在のベナン共和国南部にかつて栄えたフォン族の王国。18世紀初頭に勢力を拡大，東のヨルバ族のオヨ王国と対立して敗れ一時属国化されたが，19世紀前半にオヨが衰えると支配から脱し隆盛を誇った。強力な軍隊と高度に組織化された政治制度をもち，奴隷貿易やパーム油の貿易によって繁栄。規模は比較的小さいながら当時の西アフリカの強国として名を残した。列強のアフリカ進出に伴い，1894年フランス領となった。首都アボメーAbomeyの王宮は1985年世界文化遺産に登録された。
