The art of the Merovingian dynasty of the Frankish Kingdom (late 5th century to mid-8th century) set the course for later Western European art. It is a mixture of the traditions of Roman art of late antiquity, the abstract sensibility of Germanic art, and Eastern influences. First of all, in terms of crafts, their special obsession with light and color and their ethnic preference for abstract decorative patterns left behind luxurious accessories and weapons with striking color schemes made from gold and jewels, as well as majestic religious implements. In particular, the technique of partition inlay, which originated in the East, developed, and intricate craftsmanship can be seen in the sword (c. 480) excavated from the tomb of Hilderich I (Tournai).

フランク王国のメロビング朝(5世紀末～8世紀中葉)の美術で，後の西ヨーロッパ美術を方向づけた。古代末期のローマ美術の伝統とゲルマン美術の抽象的感覚，さらに東方の影響が混在する。　まず工芸では，光や色彩に対する特別な執着と民族特有の抽象文様装飾趣向から，金や宝石による印象的な配色の豪華な装身具や武具，荘厳な宗教的器物などを残した。とくに東方起源の仕切り象嵌（ぞうがん）の技術が発展し，巧妙な細工はヒルデリヒ1世の墓(トゥールネ)出土の剣(480ころ)などにみられる。
