The so-called Southern Sea Route, which runs through the northern part of the Indian Ocean, has been one of the two major routes of East-West transportation since ancient times, along with the Western Route (Silk Road) which runs through Central Asia. In that sense, the Southern Sea Route can be called the "Maritime Silk Road." In fact, the Southern Sea Route was also an important route for transporting silk.
