...The word's origin can be traced back to Central Asia, and the same name was used for plucked string instruments until the 10th century, when the playing technique of rubbing the strings with a bow was introduced to Southern Europe via Southwest Asia. By the mid-11th century, various bowed instruments were widely used in Europe, and there is a theory that the larger ones were called fiddles in contrast to the small rebec (also called lubec, made of a single piece of wood and shaped like a thin pear). In addition, the trumpet, marine (long, box-shaped), hurdy-gurdy, and other bowed instruments of the time were clearly known. Lira The name is sometimes used for all fiddles except for the rebec.
