multilateral trade

...When trade between two countries (or regions) results in an export (or import) surplus on one side, hindering the expansion of trade, a third country (region) is used to settle the balance among the three countries (regions). When it involves three or more countries, it is called multilateral trade. When trying to balance the trade balance between two countries, the total trade amount tends to shrink in order to adjust the balance to the country with the smaller export amount.
