〘 noun 〙 A structure in which the ceiling is made higher by using diagonal members. Many of these have a central ceiling that is higher than the surrounding area due to the use of arc- shaped supports and ribs . ※Nikko Sanshi (1825) vol. 5 "The main room at the front, the ceiling, is a double-layered, raised coffered ceiling, and inside is a deep blue rock with a round dragon painted on it, all of which are different in shape."
