Sibir' (English spelling)

...It is roughly equivalent in size to the United States and Europe (excluding the former Soviet Union) combined. In Russian it is called Sibir', a name derived from the Sibir Khanate, which was defeated by Yermak near Tobolsk in the 16th century. For the Russians of the past, Siberia was "beyond the Urals," but as they moved eastward, its territory expanded.
