[Born] Gennin 1 (1224) [Died] October 23, 1276. Musashi, Mutsuura. A military commander in the mid-Kamakura period. Grandson of Hojo Yoshitoki and son of Saneyasu. He had a villa in Kanazawa, Musashi Mutsuura Manor, and was called Kanazawa-dono (Kanazawa became a family name when his grandson Sadaaki was born). In 1234, he became head priest of the Kosamurai Office, and served in various roles, including Hikitsuke-shu, Hyōjō-shu, Echigo no Kami, Hikitsuke no Tōnin, and Echigo Sogo Bugyo, and assisted the regents Tsunetoki, Tokimune, and Tokimune. He loved learning, and studied under the Confucian scholar Kiyohara Noritaka. He personally collected, copied, and collated many books, including Gunsho Jiyō, and based these books he established a library in his villa. This was the beginning of the Kanazawa Library. On the other hand, he was a deep believer in Buddhism, built Shomyoji Temple and was also known as Shomyojidono, and invited Eison, the head priest of Saidaiji Temple, to Kamakura.
