Year of death: August 22, 6th year of Ansei (September 18, 1859) Year of birth: Bunsei 11 (1828) A Mito feudal samurai executed in the Ansei Purge. His given name was Tomoyoshi, later Tomoaki. He was commonly known as Kikujiro, later Kokichi. His father was Ukai Kichizaemon, and his mother was the eldest son of Sasaki. He studied the Mito domain's unique Shinpatsu-ryu artillery, and was awarded for his dedication to martial arts in 1855 and 1856. In February 1857, he became a member of the Koju-nin-gumi, an assistant to the Kyoto residence office, and in 1858, he became the assistant Kyoto residence office's assistant, helping his father, who was the Kyoto residence office. While in Tokyo, he associated with patriots and court nobles, and advocated Sonno Joi. In August 1860, he took the name Oze Denzaemon and carried the secret imperial edict of Bogo, which had been issued to the Mito domain in order to overthrow the government of Ii Naosuke, who had concluded the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan, to the Mito domain's Edo residence on behalf of his father. He was sentenced to death and executed on charges of conspiring to have the secret imperial edict transmitted. He is said to have sneered when the sentence was handed down.
