…He excelled in Shosagoto, but was especially known for his aragoto theatrical arts, and was praised as a master of triptychs in the Edo theatrical world during the Genroku period, along with Ichikawa Danjuro I and Nakamura Shichisaburo I. He was skilled in Yatsuko Tanzen, and his version of Asahina had a wild and bold humor that reflected the spirit of the Genroku period, and demonstrated the essence of Yakko aragoto. His sideburns, sickle beard, monkey eyeshadow, sloppy lines, and the crane circle crest on his plain robe remain as Asahina styles to this day. …
