Okhotsk Sea High Pressure

A high pressure system that appears in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. It often appears mainly from late May to early July. Even if its center is not in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, it is called by the same name if it is in the vicinity. In the upper atmosphere, it is often accompanied by a ridge of pressure caused by the westerly wind wave or a cut-off high, in which case that part is a tall warm high. However, the lower layer is occupied by a cold and humid marine polar air mass (the Sea of ​​Okhotsk air mass), which blows into the Tohoku region of Honshu and Hokkaido as a cold northeasterly wind (which is often called "yamase" in many regions). If this high pressure system is dominant and stagnates for a long period of time, it can cause a prolonged rainy season or a cool summer, resulting in cold damage. It can also appear temporarily in other seasons, bringing gloomy weather similar to the rainy season.

オホーツク海に現れる高気圧。主として5月下旬ごろから7月の前半にかけてよく出現する。中心がオホーツク海になくても、その近傍にある場合には、同じ名前でよばれる。上空では偏西風波動の気圧の尾根や切離(せつり)高気圧が対応していることが多く、その場合には、その部分は背の高い温暖高気圧である。しかし下層は冷湿な海洋性寒帯気団（オホーツク海気団）で占められており、本州の東北地方や北海道に冷たい北東風（これを「やませ」とよぶ地方が多い）となって吹き込んでくる。この高気圧が優勢で停滞期間が長いと、梅雨が長引いたり、冷夏になったりして冷害がおこる。ほかの季節にも一時的に現れることがあり、梅雨に似たぐずついた天気をもたらす。
