A high pressure system that appears in the Sea of Okhotsk. It often appears mainly from late May to early July. Even if its center is not in the Sea of Okhotsk, it is called by the same name if it is in the vicinity. In the upper atmosphere, it is often accompanied by a ridge of pressure caused by the westerly wind wave or a cut-off high, in which case that part is a tall warm high. However, the lower layer is occupied by a cold and humid marine polar air mass (the Sea of Okhotsk air mass), which blows into the Tohoku region of Honshu and Hokkaido as a cold northeasterly wind (which is often called "yamase" in many regions). If this high pressure system is dominant and stagnates for a long period of time, it can cause a prolonged rainy season or a cool summer, resulting in cold damage. It can also appear temporarily in other seasons, bringing gloomy weather similar to the rainy season.
