Cold medicines currently in use aim to reduce fever and relieve pain, and consist of aspirin (acetaminophen), ethenzamide, caffeine, etc. as the main ingredients, with antihistamines and antitussives added. Chinese herbal medicines such as Kakkonto are also effective. It is important to use either of these in the early stages. In the over-the-counter drug market, they are sold by various companies as "general cold medicines."

現在使用されている風邪薬は解熱と鎮痛の効果をねらったもので，アスピリン（アセトアミノフェン），エテンザミド，カフェインなどを主薬とし，これに抗ヒスタミン薬，鎮咳(ちんがい)薬を加えたものである。葛根湯(かっこんとう)などの漢方処方も効果がある。いずれも初期に用いることが大切。一般用医薬品市場では〈総合感冒薬〉として種々の会社から販売されている。
