Founded in 1842, this is one of Europe's leading Austrian orchestras. Originally it was the orchestra of the Vienna Court Opera, but it also began to perform in concerts under the direction of the court conductor O. Nicolai. Even today, it is called the Vienna State Opera Orchestra for operas, and the above name for concerts. The orchestra is managed independently by the musicians, and the conductor is also selected by the musicians. Mahler, Weingartner, and Furtwängler have all served as permanent conductors, and Claudio Abbado (1933-) has held the position since 1971.
