Pottery characteristic of the Okhotsk culture found from Sakhalin Island to northern Hokkaido and the Okhotsk Sea coast, and from the Pacific coast east of Kushiro to the Kuril Islands. It is thought to have appeared during Japan's Heian period, but its end is thought to date back to the Kamakura period. The shape of the vessel is jar-shaped with a narrow neck and a round body. It is generally black in color. Patterns are applied to the shoulder, and include indentations, linear or wavy applied patterns, and indentations on top of that.
