Bodhi

Japanese: 菩提 - ぼだい
Bodhi

A transliteration of the Sanskrit word bodhi. Bodhi is a noun derived from buddh (to awaken), and represents the awakening to the truth, or enlightenment, and includes the wisdom to attain that enlightenment. Its highest state is anuttara sammyaksambodhi, which translates as supreme enlightenment. This word came to be identified with nirvana, the Buddhist ideal, and later when nirvana came to refer to death, the two words became mixed together and were said to be "mourning for bodhi," which came to mean "praying for the repose of the dead."
