…His name means “the shining one.” When he met his father for the first time as an adult, he was told that he would grant any wish he had. He borrowed his father’s chariot for one day and set off into the sky, but he did not know how to control the wild horses, and when the fiery chariot went off the track and nearly burned the earth, it was shot down into the Eridanos River by Zeus’ thunderbolt. His sisters, the Heliades (daughters of the sun god), gathered on the banks of the river and mourned his death. They turned into poplar trees, and their tears solidified into amber. …
