A North Indian percussion instrument. It is a long, thin, double-sided drum with a slight bulge in the middle of the body. It is played with bare hands, sitting cross-legged and holding the instrument between both hands. It is a similar instrument to the South Indian drum Mridanga, but there are differences in the material and playing method. The pakhawaj was once widely used in North India, but today the tabla (drum) has taken over, and it is only used to accompany old-style vocal music such as dhrupad and dhamār, and in limited genres such as bin (the North Indian name for bena).
