Year of death: 4/7/1526 (5/18/1526) Year of birth: 1464.11.19 (10.20.1464) An emperor during the Warring States period (reigned 1500-26). The first son of Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado. His mother was Asako, the daughter of Niwata Nagakata, the steward of Fushiminomiya. His given name was Katsuhito. He was proclaimed prince in December 1480 (Bunmei 12). During his father's reign as Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado, financial difficulties in the Muromachi shogunate made it difficult for him to abdicate, so he ascended to the throne at the prime of his life, age 37, following his father's death from illness. There were also no funds available for his father's grand funeral, and thanks to the efforts of Sennyuji Temple, it was carried out 43 days after his death. As a result, it was extremely difficult to raise the funds for the enthronement ceremony, and regent Hosokawa Masamoto recklessly said he would skip the ceremony, and Wakasa Shugo Takeda Motomitsu, who tried to force the collection of enthronement tiered money, was attacked and killed by local vassals. In 1507, Masamoto was assassinated, and the following year the regents were rapidly replaced by Hosokawa Sumimoto and Takakuni, so there was no time for him to ascend to the throne. Although the date for the enthronement ceremony became a reality with the reinstatement of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshitaka in June of the same year, the Shogunate government was still unstable, and it was not until March 1521, 22 years after his accession, that the enthronement ceremony was finally held amid the extraordinary situation of the Shogun fleeing to Kyoto. As for the Daijo-e ceremony, there was no prospect of it happening, and it was not even an issue. He is an emperor who epitomizes the so-called imperial court ritual. <References> Imaya Akira, "Sengoku Daimyo and the Emperor" (Akira Imaya) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
