Opera Comic - Opera Comic (English spelling) opéra comique French

A type of French opera. A comic opera that was established in the 18th century by combining elements of Italian improvisational comedy with the popular vaudeville that had existed in France for a long time, and used spoken lines for the dialogue. From the mid-18th century onwards, it was greatly developed by J. J. Rousseau and Grétry, but gradually many lyrical works were written, and as they approached the traditional form of opera, the only distinction between the two became the presence or absence of dialogue. From the mid-19th century onwards, they were largely divided into comic and lyrical works, the former being called opéra bouffe or operetta, and the latter opéra lyric. The opéra lyric series produced masterpieces such as Bizet's Carmen, but by the end of the 19th century it was no longer possible to distinguish them from Grande-Péra.

フランス・オペラの一種。フランスに古くからあった大衆的なボードビルに、イタリアの即興喜劇などの要素が加わって、18世紀に成立した喜劇的オペラで、対話部分に地の台詞(せりふ)を用いた。18世紀中葉以降、J・J・ルソーやグレトリーらによって大きく発展したが、しだいに叙情的なものも多く書かれるようになり、伝統的なオペラの形に近づいて、両者の区別は台詞の有無だけになった。19世紀中葉以降、喜劇的なものと叙情的なものに大きく分かれ、前者はオペラ・ブフまたはオペレッタ、後者はオペラ・リリックともよばれた。オペラ・リリックの系列からはビゼーの『カルメン』などの傑作が生まれたが、19世紀末にはグラントペラと区別がつかなくなった。
