Rip is the protagonist of a short story of the same name included in The Sketch-Book (1819-20) by American author W. Irving. While out hunting, Rip encounters some mysterious men (who we later learn are the ghosts of the British explorer H. Hudson and his companions) in the Catskill Mountains, drinks their alcohol, and falls asleep. When he wakes up and returns home, he finds that 20 years have passed and America has become independent, making him a sort of Urashima Taro character. He became a mythical and legendary figure in America, and was later sung about in poems by Melville, Hart Crane, and others, but also became a common noun referring to a person who is out of date.
