Taketoki Kikuchi

Japanese:
Taketoki Kikuchi
Year of death: Masayoshi 2/Genkō 3.3.13 (1333.4.27)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the late Kamakura period. Son of Takamori. Childhood name: Shoryumaru, Buddhist name: Jakua. A warrior with his family home in Kikuchi County, Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture), he steadily expanded his influence as a local warrior group, mainly in Higo Province, during the Kamakura period. In 1333, Emperor Godaigo issued an imperial edict to Taketoki to urge him to gather forces to overthrow the shogunate. Sensing these disturbing movements, Chinzei Tandai Akahashi Hidetoki summoned the warriors of Kyushu to Hakata. Taketoki also appeared in Hakata, but his actions had always been viewed with suspicion, and he was scolded by Samurai-dokoro Hirota Hisayoshi for his late arrival. Knowing that he was under suspicion, Taketoki tried to attack the Chinzei Tandai together with Shoni Sadatsune and Otomo Sadamune, but the two of them thought it was too early and instead confided in the Chinzei Tandai. Taketoki had no choice but to lead 250 of his clan members to attack the Chinzei Tandaikan, but was defeated and died in battle along with his son Yoritaka and his younger brother Kakusho. <References> Ryokaku, "Hakata Diary"; Sugimoto Naoyuki, "Three Generations of the Kikuchi Clan"; Kawazoe Shoji, "Kikuchi Takemitsu"; Aso Shina Yasuo, "The Kikuchi Clan"
