Nuclear magnetic resonance is a method of non-destructively learning about the structure and state of a substance by using the spin of atomic nuclei. When an atomic nucleus with nuclear spin is placed in a strong magnetic field, the nuclear spin splits into two energy states, one parallel to the magnetic field and the other opposite, and absorbs electromagnetic waves with a wavelength corresponding to the energy difference. This energy difference is influenced by the distribution of electrons around the nucleus and the bonding state of the atoms, which is observed as a resonance absorption spectrum. In particular, high-resolution NMR of ^1H and ^13C nuclei has become indispensable as a means of determining the structure of organic compounds.

核磁気共鳴といい、原子核のスピンを利用して物質の構造・状態を非破壊的に知る方法。核スピンを持つ原子核を強い磁場の中に置くと、核スピンが磁場と平行、または逆方向の2つのエネルギー状態に分裂し、そのエネルギー差に対応する波長の電磁波を吸収するようになる。このエネルギー差は、その原子核の周辺の電子の分布や原子の結合状態に影響され、それが共鳴吸収スペクトルとして観測される。特に、^1H及び^13C核の高分解能NMRは有機化合物の構造決定手段として必要不可欠になっている。
