Ichijo-in Temple

Japanese:
Ichijo-in Temple

Founded at the end of the 10th century, this is the most representative monzeki (head priest) of Kofuku-ji Temple. After Kakushin (1065-1121), the son of the regent Fujiwara no Morozane, it developed as a monzeki where the children of the regents and chancellors could enter, and in the Kamakura period, the inn families such as Kazan-in and Rishu-in were also subsumed under this monzeki, and it was unified by a head priest from the Konoe family to form a huge organization on a par with Daijo-in. The Kan'yo Ruijusho (Compendium of the Simple Rules) written by the priest Gyoken in the mid-Kamakura period records the successive head priests of Ichijo-in, its branch temples, manors, and annual events, and is a first-class historical source for understanding Ichijo-in during this period. In the early modern period, the temple held a land of 1,492 koku and maintained its authority as a temple head who received the royal family as a priest, but it was abolished after the Meiji Restoration when the head priest returned to secular life and became the chief priest of Kasuga Shrine. The Sannejo Itsuki, currently held at Kofuku-ji Temple, was handed down to Ichijo-in Temple.
