The terms court drama and court theater can broadly refer to the theatrical form protected and performed by the courts of all countries in all eras and the places where they were performed, but they usually refer to those plays (theaters, theater companies) that were performed in Europe from the end of the Renaissance to around the first half of the 19th century. The actor and playwright Shakespeare belonged to the troupe of the Lord Chamberlain in England, and the Frenchman Molière served at the court of Louis XIV, not only performing his masterpieces of comedy at the court theater, but also working for court festivals and events. ...
