A former town in Awa County, in the northern part of the midstream of the Yoshino River, in northern Tokushima Prefecture. The central market is located on the Higaidani alluvial fan, and developed after the market was opened during the Keicho era, and was also a key transportation point to Sanuki. Rice fields were opened up by the Awa Irrigation Canal, and fruit and vegetable cultivation and livestock were carried out. In April 2005, it merged with Yoshino Town and Tonari Town in Itano County, and Awa Town in Awa County, to become a city, Awa City. 72.46 km2 . Population 12,008 (2003). 徳島県北部,吉野川中流北部の阿波郡の旧町。中心の市場は日開谷(ひがいだに)扇状地上にあり,慶長年間の市場開設後発達,讃岐(さぬき)への交通要地でもあった。阿波用水による水田が開け,果樹・野菜栽培,畜産を行う。2005年4月板野郡吉野町,土成町,阿波郡阿波町と合併し市制,阿波市となる。72.46km2。1万2008人(2003)。
