594-661 The 35th Emperor of the Asuka period. Reigned 642-645.
Born in the second year of the reign of Empress Suiko. Princess of King Chinu. Her mother was Princess Kibihime. She was the Empress of Emperor Jomei, and ascended to the throne after his death. Soga no Emishi and his son Iruka wielded great power. Prince Nakano Oe and Nakatomi Kamako (Fujiwara no Kamatari) annihilated the father and son in 645. The Emperor abdicated in favor of his younger brother Prince Karu (Emperor Kokutoku), and made Nakano Oe the Crown Prince. In 655, she was re-enthroned as Emperor Saimei. She died on July 24, the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Saimei, at the age of 68. 推古天皇2年生まれ。茅渟(ちぬ)王の王女。母は吉備姫王(きびつひめのおおきみ)。舒明天皇の皇后で,舒明の死後,即位。蘇我蝦夷(そがの-えみし)・入鹿(いるか)父子が強権力をふるう。中大兄(なかのおおえの)皇子と中臣鎌子(藤原鎌足(かまたり))らが645年その父子をほろぼした。天皇は弟の軽(かるの)皇子(孝徳天皇)に譲位し,中大兄を皇太子とした。655年斉明(さいめい)天皇として重祚(ちょうそ)。斉明天皇7年7月24日死去。68歳。別名は宝皇女,天豊財重日足姫天皇(あめとよたからいかしひたらしひめのすめらみこと),飛鳥天皇,後岡本天皇。⇒斉明天皇
